What is Garcinia Cambogia and why should you care?
Garcinia Cambogia is a fruit called the Malabar tamarind, full of hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which has been made popular as a weight loss supplement. The question is – does it actually work?
I was provided with a bottle to try from US Premium Garcinia Cambogia, and while I didn’t experience any miraculous weight loss (5 lbs over a month), I think it may be a supportive supplement if used the right way. So for today’s Five on Friday post, here are 5 tips on how to use Garcinia Cambogia, summarized from Dr. Bowden’s article Fat-Loss Hope Or Hype: The Truth About Garcinia Cambogia.
1 – Choose a formula that is at least 50% HCA.
This is a recommendation from Dr. Harry Preuss, a researcher who has been researching HCA in humans. The formula I tried was 60% HCA.
2 – Choose a formula with potassium, calcium and/or magnesium in it.
These help your body absorb the HCA, and decrease its degradation into its inactive form. The formula I tried had potassium, calcium, and magnesium stearate in it.
3 – Take the right dose.
The supplement is taken 3 times per day, and you want the dose for each sitting to be at least 0.9 g of HCA. The formula I tried had 1 g of Garcinia Cambogia formula, and at 60% concentration, I believe this means it has 0.6 g of HCA per serving, a little less than this recommendation.
4 – Take the supplement on an empty stomach, 30-60 min before a meal.
This is important because it needs space to work, and it can also help curb appetite. In addition, if taken with food, it can bind to some components of what you’ve eaten and be rendered inactive.
I have to admit this was tough for me to do. With a busy work schedule and lots of meetings, I could not always predict when I was going to eat, or remember to take the supplements in the middle of a meeting. I’m sure this impacted how effective it was for me.
5 – Be consistent.
Taking 3 doses per day is also important, and being consistent about it will maximize the effects.
I was also lax on this front and didn’t always take it 3 times a day – which also would have impacted my results.
I would like to try it again and follow the tips to a tee to see if my results are any different. Check out this post from Nutri Inspector for more info on Garcinia Cambogia.
